6 Outdoorsy New Years Resolutions

Are You Ready to Welcome in 2022?

Well, we did it. We made it through yet another trip around the sun. Congrats!

    And I mean that.

Sure, 2021 was a huge step up from 2020, but it was still a doozie of a year. We are still in the midst of this ever-changing pandemic and enduring all of the setbacks it has caused – with not much of an end in sight tbh. That being said, this year has proven to all of us that we can bounce back and come out of a knockdown stronger then ever. So let’s get on with it.

Here are 6 Outdoorsy New Years Resolutions to usher in the new year with vigor and style in the backcountry!

    6 Outdoorsy New Years Resolutions

Conscious Shopping, Plan a Backpack, Treat Yo-Self

Shop with 1% For The Planet

What is 1% for the Planet? A global movement inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through annual memberships and everyday actions. We advise on giving strategies, we certify donations and we amplify the impact of our network.

Here are a couple of brands that are involved with 1% For The Planet that we love:

Patagonia | Peak Design | Klean Kanteen | Wild Rye | Grayl

Some more amazing brands that have an amazing work ethos:

    Gregory Backpacks | CoalaTree Organics

    GET OUTSIDE

Commit to getting outside at least once a week. Plan a hike! Take up trail running. Take the family camping. Break yourself on a mountain bike (please don’t, actually) Whatever it is, just get into nature!

Not only is it just straight-up awesome to be out in nature, but there are many mental benefits to spending more time outside.

    PRACTICE LEAVE NO TRACE

THE NATURE THAT SUSTAINS, CONNECTS AND INSPIRES US IS AT RISK.

There’s no substitute for nature. Together we can protect it from impacts like overuse, trash, and harming endangered wildlife.

It’s all about preserving nature and sometimes even leaving it looking better than when you found it.

Commit to practicing and sharing the 7 principles of Leave No Trace on all of your outdoor adventures.

    PLAN A BACKPACKING TRIP

A backpacking trip can be an amazing experience and a chance to get outdoors for an extended period of time. The new year is a time to set new goals and plan new adventures. Planning a long backpack and all the details will give you something to train for on your shorter hikes.

If you’re new to the world of backpacking, check out our 3 Day Backpacking Checklist to get geared up properly. One of my favorite backpacks that I recommend to anyone – beginner to advanced – is this epic 3 Day Grand Canyon Backpacking trip.

    SEE MORE SUNRISES

Get your circadian rhythm sleep cycle in check this year by waking up with the sun. Watching the sunrise promotes a healthy sleep cycle, stronger immune system, and is nature’s free red light therapy to keep you healthy for all your adventures.

I may be beating a dead horse here (terrible expression, btw), but sunrise is the best time to get the most epic and dramatic photos – both when shooting landscape or portraiture. Remember, 8pm is backpackers midnight, so hit the sleeping bag early and get up while it’s still dark. Just remember to charge your headlamp!

    DO SOME VOLUNTEER WORK

Volunteer to protect our planet . Giving back will make you feel good as well. Leave No Trace offers volunteer opportunities such as trail steward, trail projects, trash clean ups and more.

There are so many fantastic organizations that put together events that are free to register for. Take a look around your area to see what you can get involved with!
